The Role

The VFX Supervisor leads creative teams to deliver outstanding visual effects work, primarily for feature film and broadcast productions. They direct and oversee work on VFX projects, providing technical and artistic leadership, and ensuring the timely delivery of imagery that meets Territory’s high standards. The VFX Supervisor will also work directly and collaboratively with the clients.

Managing and supervising the project team, briefing them, and providing constructive feedback is a key focus of the role, along with ensuring consistency in the work and developing production methodologies, creative approaches, and problem-solving on assigned projects. The VFX Supervisor may also be involved in managing production workflow and pipeline, as well as bidding current and future projects when requested. The role reports to the Creative Director.


ROLE: VFX Supervisor (Project-Hire)

REPORTS TO: Creative Director

LOCATION: San Francisco

CONTRACT: Full-time (40 hours/ week)


Responsibilities

Creative

  • Lead teams of artists and technicians to produce creative work of the exceptional standard for which Territory Studio is known.
  • Work closely with artists throughout the life of projects, ensuring they understand the goals and deadlines for their work, bringing them back on track when required, and inspiring them to produce excellent work.
  • Lead the look development and review all technical and R&D requirements for the start-up of new projects.
  • Work closely with a project’s Producer to ensure that work is delivered within project deadlines and meets the client’s brief, both creatively and technically.
  • Participate in client-facing meetings and calls, alongside producers, receiving feedback and offering creative advice as projects progress.
  • Lead by example. Perform shot work when absolutely necessary. Personally take on especially challenging shots that may prove difficult for other crew members.
  • Foster a culture of excellence around the creative use of techniques, software and technology. Drive Territory’s reputation for captivating global audiences with iconic masterpieces.
  • Onset VFX Supervision for assigned projects, as needed.


Commercial Accountability

  • Devise a creative and technical approach that is appropriate to each project’s scope/budget/timeline.
  • Understand the commercial implications of a project’s resource needs, budget, timeline, and impact across the wider studio.
  • Be accountable for the commercial viability of the creative approach and successful delivery of projects.


People / Talent / Team

  • To develop the talent within the creative team, feeding in and guiding individuals development plans wherever necessary.
  • Support, guide and mentor the Art Directors throughout the creative process and lifecycle of projects.
  • Be mindful and responsible for the work-life balance of artists and teams based upon sound project management.
  • Support recruitment of project hires, working with recruiters to ensure the best possible talent contributes to Territory’s work.
  • Collaborate with and work closely alongside the rest of the studio’s creative leadership team.


The Studio

  • Act with integrity and in accordance with the general values of the studio, upholding the principles of the Territory brand and business.
  • Help develop and enforce processes and workflows across projects and, where requested, the studio as a whole.
  • Collaborate with the Production and Talent teams to ensure creative resources are assigned optimally.
  • Participate in departmental and company-wide meetings and events, as required.

 


Qualifications

Education/Experience Required

  • 7+ years’ experience as a professional creative working on photoreal visual effects for major film and television projects.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing creative teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

 


Skills

  • Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills.
  • Ability to work with Creative Directors and Art Director to plan the creative approach to the show.
  • Confidence and discretion in dealing with clients.
  • Critical eye for detail and be able to communicate visual aspects to the team.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and calm under pressure.
  • On-set supervision experience is a big plus.

 


Daily tasks

  • Hold daily check-ins with the team to ensure that daily milestones and deadlines are clear to artists and that projects are on track.
  • Bidding and scoping projects in consultation with production, as requested
  • Give feedback on project work day-to-day, ensuring only the best work leaves the studio.
  • Take part in client calls and meetings through the life of projects.
  • Maintaining a hands-on approach as well as overseeing project teams.


Working conditions

Office environment. This role may require additional effort outside of regular business hours when facing deadlines. and such requirements may be at short notice. Some travel may be required.
