A star-studded audio reinterpretation of George Orwell's dystopian masterpiece.
Read MoreReleased exactly 40 years after the date of Winston’s first diary entry, Audible's audiodrama interpretation of the classic novel stars a brilliant cast including Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo and Tom Hardy with an original score composed by Matthew Bellamy and composer Ilan Eshkeri. Territory was commissioned to concept and produce an online teaser, International TVC, paid social campaign and cinematic theatrical commercial. Created in collaboration with Alphabetical Studio and Josh Ellingson, an analog-tech specialist artist, we scripted narrative, designed and delivered a piece which balances two of the novel's key themes; identity and censorship.
A nod to Michael Radford’s vision of the Ministry of Truth workplace, we created an installation-style scene depicting Winston’s work environment, with old broadcast monitors presenting propaganda content to allow deeper storytelling. Winston, dimly lit, is depicted as yet another drone at work manipulating documentation.

Josh Ellingson’s Pepper’s Ghost illusions were a centrepiece and a perfect platform to manifest visual queues to Winston’s inner-thoughts. The transition from the woman to the rat is visual metaphor of cause and effect, his relationship with Julia would ultimately lead to arrest and torture by means of rats – his worst fear.
The video wall represents the constant surveillance and scrutiny of Big Brother in people’s lives, highlighting the oppressive and controlling nature of the ruling party, INGSOC. The doublespeak slogans emphasise the propaganda and deceptive tactics used by the party to maintain power and control.
The film was almost entirely captured in camera, with all footage, projections, documentation and props, designed bespoke for the production ahead of the shoot.
