Dune: Prophecy

Anirul

The design thinking behind Anirul, the Bene Gesserit system, prioritised functionality and believability, aiming to visually represent a complex system with a sense of purpose.. It was conceived as a “beautiful brain” that showcases integral data. We incorporated regal qualities through colour palettes and form, while also introducing appropriate elements to ensure it felt grounded within the Dune universe. The aim was to create a sense of depth and a “library of data”, reflecting the Bene Gesserit’s archival nature and long-term manipulation of bloodlines. Ultimately, the design sought to achieve digital luxury and regality, moving beyond mere functional aesthetics to create an immersive and meaningful experience.

Symbology

The design team devised ancient symbology to give the Anirul UI depth and believability. They integrated images and symbols to enhance narrative clarity and aesthetic cohesion. House symbols represented bloodlines, while celestial symbols denoted house iconography. The DNA helix and other elements were visualized using ancient symbols, and Arabic design and musical notation enriched the visual language. The overall design aimed to create depth, meaning, and a sense of history and regalness.

Concepts and Development

Early designs explored tree-like structures and the visualisation of DNA threads. Client feedback played a crucial role in the refinement process, leading to more structured and less abstract representations. The design evolved to incorporate regal aesthetics and a balance between familiar and alien elements. The final Anirul design aimed for functionality and believability, embodying a sense of digital luxury appropriate to the ‘Dune’ universe.

Resurrection Coffin

Tula Harkonnen uses a coffin-like device to resurrect Lila. This technology demonstrates the blurred lines between life and death in the Dune universe, as well as the Bene Gesserit sisterhood’s access to highly advanced medical capabilities. The instrument UI takes a biophilic style to depict both how the device works and the Bene Gesserit’s approach to technology design.
