Territory Studio partnered with Vast to craft an emotionally resonant vision aboard the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1. From initial concepting through delivery, we embraced our role as creative collaborators to define and deliver human-centric
visualizations that highlight Vast’s pioneering ambition to create transformative opportunities for researchers and private astronauts seeking to innovate in orbit.
After extensive pre-production, we captured live-action footage and seamlessly integrated VFX to bring the Haven-1 space station to life. Cinematic scenes portray spacefarers in an interior that redefines living and working in space.
What began as a request for still images evolved into preparation for a live shoot, as we worked with Vast to identify that moments in motion could expand consumers’ understanding of what the Haven-1 space station has to offer. Our team began with an intensive concept and design phase, and fully rendered initial storyboards in 3D before beginning production to simulate what live shots would look like. This process allowed for pointed direction on set, and informed the VFX work necessary in the post production process.
During the production phase, our team facilitated a three-day live shoot on a greenscreen stage in Los Angeles, using a Technocrane rig, high-speed cameras, and a talented Hollywood stunt team. This included creative oversight, direction, and involvement down to key details like casting and wardrobe choice. Embracing the challenge of accurately representing life experiences in zero gravity, we ensured actors interacted with real objects during the shoot, which were later replicated in post production.
Multiple CG full-body replacements were created during post production, and hair was crafted strand by strand in 3D to authentically portray zero-gravity conditions. Our team used tools including Cinema 4D, Houdini, Maya, Nuke, and After Effects to accomplish this expert VFX delivery. The result is a unique take on life in space, emotive moments of mankind captured in stunning detail to showcase living and working aboard the space station.
