Lifting Story into Design

Lift is a fun modern take on the heist genre brought into the modern day with NFTs, highly futuristic aircraft, and AR hacking glasses. Featuring a diverse and creative range of different graphical languages, Territory's design and VFX carries key story beats throughout the film and uses motion graphics to expand on the unique identities of the characters.
A key set in the movie, the Private Jet is a super high-end modern plane for a millionaire art collector, Mollsen. Inside we crafted a modern pilots instrument display featuring precise cartography, the design adapted to the plot including warning states to weave together vital elements of the story.
Deliberately brash and flashy interior design, the cabin features screens that are adorned with title animations that represent the character of Mollsen.
Mi-Sun’s UI reflects her style: lo-fi, angular, pragmatic and designed to be as fast and practical as possible when seconds mean the difference between success and failure. To further visually differentiate between characters’ tech, each graphic language was given its own colourway throughout the film that is symbolic of the characters themselves.
Beyond graphics work, we crafted a number of connecting VFX tracking shots that impossibly moves the camera to a new scene. We created a spin around Mi-Sun’s AR glasses lens to a POV shot of the graphic display, a slow-mo gun breakdown reveals its firing mechanism, and a fly-through out and through the inside of a plane body seamlessly entering the pilot’s cockpit.
Focusing on a deliberate pixelation due to the use of smaller, handheld screens, Luke’s tactile and down-to-earth tech consequently becomes more LED-based, fitting the beautiful set-design props the graphics are comped onto.
Inspired by the real-world Interpol OS and tools, was right to the right approach to get the balance right between factual screen content and visual design. Screens featured a lot of information, including video feeds, and telemetry data that the actors react to.
