Working closely with VFX production to character-led briefs and colour palettes, we created screens and holographic concepts for key scenes, to help support some quite complex visual storytelling. Matching the tech to personalities was fundamental in our designs; to reflect Fury’s attitude, we created functional, utilitarian tech, but distinct from S.H.I.E.L.D. with a slightly DIY feel. And a familiar but evolved design language based on Tony Stark’s F.R.I.D.A.Y. glasses for Peter's E.D.I.T.H. glasses interface, to feel like an evolution of Stark’s work, whilst ensuring optimal technical abilities from the user's POV.

From Fury tech to Stark tech, and functional to super-advanced UI, this project for Marvel Studios was a UI fanatic’s dream! With technology at its helm, featuring heavily from start to finish, we felt quite at home working on this billion dollar summer blockbuster.

“It’s always exciting to work on a Marvel property and being able to play in this incredible universe they’ve created. Especially when you get the opportunity to develop something new like we did with the Fury Technology. Since he is no longer with S.H.I.E.L.D. the design ethos was much more rugged and militaristic than before, to reflect his guerrilla-like operation. With E.D.I.T.H. we were tasked to evolve the Stark technology to next-level complexity, though never at the expense of the story. The bus sequences were narratively quite complex, so clarity was always absolute priority in the design consideration.”

Concept Art
Originally asked to develop concepts to explore how maps could look in holographic form, we then moved onto Stark jet operational screens to embellish the interior. We inherited colour palettes from the Art Department for the concepts, but had creative licence for the UI and content where we created approximately 50 assets, including holographic environments which were built from scratch, before being awarded any shots.
The biggest challenge from a creative standpoint was to help support some quite complex visual storytelling. We experimented with volumetrics and detail to convey the right look and feel of the characters and technology.
