Titles

We created unique title sequences for each episode of Man Who Fell to Earth, teasing key plot points through the use of design. This included the foreboding sequence of a single bullet loaded into a chamber, an ominous game of hangman, a title placed within a bee hive and much more.

Compositing and illustrations

The protagonist, Faraday, delivered an important message using a series of vintage, ray-tube-powered, colour televisions. We composited images of Faraday’s speech into each screen, generating effects that recreated the image projection seen on a real television set. With this earlier television technology pivotal to the episode, it was important that we designed an aesthetic that remained authentic.

To visualise the key components of Faraday’s speech, we created hand-drawn imagery accompanied by annotations to appear directly on-screen. The annotations were designed to appear written on the camera lens using pen, mirroring the writing of equations and notes on a whiteboard.

Locators

To introduce London as a new location, we inserted the city’s name into a a shot of the river thames — the giant letters were made to float on the water, parting to allow a boat to pass through. We also animated a plane to fly above the title and across the screen.
