ZDK is a factual drama, almost a dramatized documentary in terms of the level of authenticity it required. We were tasked with creating all the screen graphics that were used in the hunt for Bin Laden, and it proved to be a fascinating project. Working closely with Bigelow, initial concepts were purely research driven to identify the specific technology used by the military, their suppliers, and the screen conventions that we needed to emulate.
From there it was a case of interpreting factual evidence and data within the film’s narrative, and find the best use of screens to support plot points and performance. It was an interesting, if delicate, balance to maintain authenticity while fictionalising aspects for narrative purposes. From Predator drone footage to satellite and aerial image, our screens helped to explain plot points and build dramatic tension as the story unfolded.
