With previous experience of designing screen graphics for military ops thrillers, our team was invited to apply their understanding of submarine environments and technical interface design to this compelling French drama. Joining the crew of Le Chant du Loup (Wolf's Call) on set in Paris, we worked closely with director Antonin Baudry and naval consultants to create credible military UI for on-set playback. Working across 6 sets, the challenge was to create animated assets that combined military authenticity, narrative story beats and cinematic aesthetic and implement them live on-set to a tight shoot schedule.

UI screen designs
A drama that explores the relationship between man and technology, the story revolves around the role of the ‘Golden Ear’, a submariner trained to listen to and interpret underwater sound patterns. To understand the interplay between sound, crew and instrumentation, we worked closely with a ‘Golden Ear’ and other submarine consultants. With their help, we simulated the technical logic and interpretive role of sonar, radar, analysis, classification and map screens, and weapons systems screens. From our conversations we were able to create technology interfaces that were rooted in real world military technology and UI design.
Screens in situ
Implemented live on-set, the animated screens help to tell this complex story. Mapping the interplay between sound, interpretation and response, each screen was meticulously planned and designed to support the director’s vision and the actors’ performances, and as a whole help to create a credible environment. An intense experience, it is rewarding to see how integral they are to the film, and how well they support the atmosphere and action.
