With restaurants, spas, a luxury casino, immersive theatrical performances, live music and more, the ship, The Resilient Lady, delivers a 5-star experience to its 2,700 passengers that challenges traditional cruise ship design and norms. This project with Virgin Voyages designing and building graphics that furnish and animate the interior of the vessel lead our motion designers on a journey of discovery.
Clean and satisfying renders beautifully combine the archaic functions of marine life with the iconic elements of roulette machines, betting tables, and classic card iconography. All images were modeled, textured, and simulated in Houdini, a software that excels in minute synchronizations and realistic simulations. With a subtle reference to James Bond, these graphics are sure to keep the leisurely cruisers as serene as the ocean.
We once again turned to Houdini to create beautiful water and cloth simulations for the remote island scenes. The team started with sketch work to block the scenes and highlight distinct differences between the three design sections. This thoughtful harmonic journey is evident in the lighthouse, which suddenly shines against a stunning starry backdrop as day transitions into night. The opaque lighting on the sails and the lurking octopus in the scarlet section are personal highlights.
All of our sections harmoniously come together in the close-up horizontal Lift deliverables. Rendered in Redshift, the texturing shines in full flex here – from scratches on the metal hooks to rugged wood that you can feel under your hand. And let’s not forget the gently swaying moss. Once again, the team’s focus is on storytelling, as we follow the glorious and sunken vessel through its sailing walks of life.
